The incident happened on Tuesday March 02, 2015; a lorry with a Sudanese registration plate was heading to Bahir Dar City, Ethiopia from the Sudan. It was driven by a Sudanese chauffer and was loaded with fertilisers.
As it reached at Enferaz town, a young Ethiopian girl reportedly asked the driver for a lift and boards the vehicle. For yet an unknown reason, some say it was because she resisted his attempts to rape her, the girl has been found laying in Quaher Kebele, near Woreta town, with her two eyes out and her hip stabbed. She was reportedly thrown out of the vehicle.
Another driver, who was reportedly watching the incident from a distance, finds the girl in a life and death situation. After getting her transported to the nearest medical centre by another car, he started pursuing the lorry that was driven by a Sudanese driver. He reported the issue to the police and although the Sudanese chauffer was asked to stop by the police, he refused to stop and continued driving.
Residents of Hamusit town, who heard the rumours of the incidents, started waiting for the lorry by blocking the road with rocks. When the driver arrived at the town, he was set upon by an angry crowd; however, police and security forces saved his life and took him to Woreta town.
Angry by the acts of the securities and police, the residents of the town protested outside the police station saying “this is worse than slavery to happen in our country at a time when our people are also suffering in foreign countries.” Citing the cordial relations between the ruling Front in Ethiopia and the Sudanese government, they fear that the suspected driver might be released from prison.
ESAT’s effort to learn about the lady’s current state has been unsuccessful but witnesses fear that she may not survive as she had suffered major physical harms.
ESAT has not also been able to get updates regarding the currency of the suspected Sudanese driver.
