Ethiopia: 18 killed in Afar-Issa skirmish
by Engidu Woldie
ESAT News (December 26, 2018)
Eighteen people have been killed in the past two days of fighting between the Afar and Issa pastoral communities as Afari officials accused the government of Djibouti, special forces of the Somali region, the Issa and Gurgura Liberation Front as well as TPLF of igniting the conflict.
Thousands have also been displaced in Gewane and Awash as a result of the conflict.
Akadir Ibrahim, an Afari human rights activist told ESAT that there is a long history of dispute and at times clashes between the Afar and Issa clans but said the recent incident was a politically motivated plot by foreign actors and regional forces inside the country.
The deadly violence was sparked when some groups replaced the flag of the Afar region with that of the Somali region in an Afari school.
The Afar Revolutionary Democratic Unity Front (ARDUF) or Afar UGUUGUMO blamed the Somali Regional Special Forces and Issa armed groups of launching deadly attack against the Afaris.
ARDUF said in a statement sent to ESAT that the attack “instigated by TPLF” was aimed at “destabilizing the central government of Abiy Ahmed and undermining the newly formed Afar Regional administration.”
ARDUF called on the federal government to protect the people of Afar
The Front said “it is also a war created by TPLF and the dictatorial regime of Djibouti to undermine the newly formed Afar Regional administration.”
ESAT’s attempt to reach the Somali regional administration for a response has not been successful.
The Afar and Issa people have historically been involved in deadly clashes over pastoral resources and turf war.

Twenty-two Ethiopians killed in cross border attack from Somalia
by Engidu Woldie
ESAT News (December 27, 2018)
An armed group from Somalia has crossed into Ethiopia and killed 22 people, according to a highly placed source in the Ethiopian Somali regional government, who said about 50 people were also injured in the cross border attack.
The attack took place in the Ethiopian border town of Gehandale, in Warder Zone and lasted about nine hours on Wednesday. The attackers had left the town before dusk.
The identity of the attackers was not immediately clear; and nor their motives.
The attackers were equipped with modern weapons and vehicles, according to the source.
Cross border attack is unusual in the border areas between the two countries but intelligence gathered in the last one week showed a group was planning the attack, the source said and added that a swift action had not been taken by the Ethiopian side.
There was an Ethiopian army stationed in Warder Zone and a small unit has also been present in the vicinity of the area under attack. The source said they have been trying to find out why the army did not try to stop the attack.
The people in the Somalia side of Gehandale have been claiming that the area in the Ethiopian side, that had come under attack, belong to them.
Several residents of Gehandale had left the town following the attack.

Eight people were killed in violence between the Afar and Issa communities bringing the total casualties to at least 30 in the last four days of fighting.
Information reaching ESAT show clashes have been reported today in towns along the Addis Ababa – Djibouti road. Seven people were killed in Gedamaytu while one person was killed in a village called Keroma.
The fighting between the two clans began on Monday and Afari officials in a statement accused the government of Djibouti, special forces of the Somali region, the Issa and Gurgura Liberation Front as well as TPLF of igniting the conflict.
The deadly violence was sparked on Monday when the Issa replaced the flag of the Afar region with that of the Somali region in an Afari school.
Seven people were killed and five injured today when the Afaris repulsed an attack by the Issa in a place called Gedamaytu, according to information received by ESAT.
In an interview with ESAT, Gaas Ahmed, President of the Afari Human Rights Organization blamed the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) for working to ignite the fight between the two communities. He said there have been a campaign calling for an attack by TPLF social media trolls.
Akadir Ibrahim, an Afari human rights activist also told ESAT yesterday that there is a long history of dispute and at times clashes between the Afar and Issa clans but said the recent incident was a politically motivated plot by foreign actors and regional forces inside the country.
The Afaris today shut down the road linking Addis Ababa to Djibouti saying the Issas used the contraband trade along the route to smuggle weapons with the help of TPLF operatives.
